Geographical Boundaries of New UTs

HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state:-


(a) whether the Government has notified geographical boundaries of newly carved Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh with UT of Ladakh spread in more area on the territory and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has released a new map of India showing the two recently created Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the newly carved boundaries also include districts of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether a number of cases of publication of wrong map of India has come to the notice of the Government during each of the last three years and the current year;

(e) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor; and

(f) the corrective measures taken/ being taken by the Government in this regard?

STATEMENT IN REPLY TO THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. *213 FOR 03.12.2019

(a) to (f): The territory of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir comprised of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir immediately before the commencement of the Constitution of India. In accordance with the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 and subsequent notification under Section 103 of this Act dated 2nd November 2019, the territories of both the successor Union Territories have been specified.
The Union Territory of Ladakh comprises of two Districts, namely Leh and Kargil. The Leh district includes the Gilgit, Gilgit Wazarat, Chilhas and Tribal Territory districts that are under illegal occupation of Pakistan.
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir comprises of the territories of the Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir immediately before the commencement of the Constitution of India, except the areas specified under the Union Territory of Ladakh. These include areas of other districts that are under illegal occupation of Pakistan.
Accordingly, Survey of India has published the new political map of the country showing the areas under the new Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the new Union Territory of Ladakh.

The Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1961 provides for action against publishing a map of India, which is not in conformity with the maps as published by the Survey of India. 216 cases relating to publishing of maps that are not in conformity with the maps as published by the Survey of India have come to the notice.
