(a) whether the Government proposes to explore new mining areas to meet the present shortage of coal; (b) if so, the details of the proposed new mining areas/sites so identified; (c) whether the Government is planning to use forest lands for exploring the new mining areas and if so, the details thereof location-wise along with the area of forest land to be used for such new mining areas; and (d) the percentage of energy needs of India that is achieved through usage of coal?

ANSWER MINISTER OF PARLIAMENTARY AFFAIRS, COAL AND MINES (SHRI PRALHAD JOSHI) (a) Yes Sir.
(b) In the FY 2021-22 CMPDI has identified 19 coal blocks (EX-NER) and 12 Blocks in NER region for exploration of coal in the new areas. The details of the identified exploration blocks for regional exploration is enclosed in the Annexure-I.
(c) CMPDIL is doing the exploration in the forest land in some blocks with competent permission of forest authority without affecting/diversifying the forest areas.
(d) During FY 2020-21, the share of total energy generated from coal was to the tune of 73% as per the Energy Statistics, 2020-21 of MoSPI.
